Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902), born Narendranath Datta, was a Hindu monk and chief disciple of the 19th-century Indian mystic Ramakrishna. He is considered a key figure in the introduction of Indian philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world.
His speech at the Parliament of the World's Religions in Chicago in 1893 began with the words "Sisters and brothers of America..." and earned him a standing ovation, making him famous overnight as an 'orator by divine right' and a 'messenger of Indian wisdom to the Western world'.
